About this product

Experimental machine-learning guidance for mesoscale convective systems, showing the probability that observed rainfall will exceed Flash Flood Guidance within a specified radius.

Flash Flood Guidance (FFG) estimates how much rainfall over a specified duration would be needed to cause small streams to overflow their banks. The ML configurations predict the probability that observed rainfall will exceed FFG within 40, 60, 75, or 100 km of each grid point. WPC ERO is included as the official reference forecast.

Key test-set result

The 60-km configuration was the most balanced overall, followed closely by 75 km. Average test-set results indicate better ML skill than WPC for Moderate-or-greater risks, although performance varies from event to event.

Ensemble mean

The ensemble mean averages the probabilities from the 40-, 60-, 75-, and 100-km ML configurations at each grid point. It provides a single consensus view while retaining the individual radius products for comparison.

Practically Perfect verification

Practically Perfect is an observation-based benchmark created after the valid period from observed flood-proxy locations. Those observations are expanded and smoothed to show an idealized placement of risk areas. It is not a forecast. It is typically available around 11:10 AM CT the following day.

Using the map

Select one filled product and add contour overlays from any other available forecast or verification layer. The r60kmV2 member uses the same 60-km forecast neighborhoods as r60 but applies density-weighted training loss to emphasize clustered MRMS-over-FFG exceedances and flood reports. Switch between the standard 2D map and a fixed-angle 3D view where greater height represents greater probability. In 3D, ML and Practically Perfect use their continuous probabilities; WPC categorical areas are displayed as continuous surfaces within their official probability ranges. Verified dates also provide toggles for the flood-proxy observations used to construct Practically Perfect. NWS local storm reports are supplied by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet; reports for flooding, flash flooding, and selected rainfall totals are preliminary and update every five minutes for the latest forecast. The mPING layer is temporarily disabled while its data feed is repaired. Use the Archive button to change dates or open the original static graphics.
